Questions people ask
What is a tithi?
A lunar day: the time the Moon takes to move twelve degrees further ahead of the Sun. There are thirty in a lunar month — fifteen in the waxing half (Shukla paksha) ending at the full moon, and fifteen in the waning half (Krishna paksha) ending at the new moon. Because the Moon's speed varies, a tithi lasts anywhere from about 20 to 27 hours, so it rarely lines up with a calendar day.
Which tithi counts for the day?
The tithi running at sunrise names the day — the udaya tithi — and it is what a daily almanac prints. A few observances are judged at another hour: a shraddha by the tithi in the afternoon (aparahna), Pradosh at dusk, and some festivals at midnight. That is why this page also shows the Shraddha tithi when it differs.
Why is a tithi sometimes skipped or repeated?
A short tithi can begin after one sunrise and end before the next, so no sunrise ever sees it; it is called kshaya, and the almanac jumps over it. A long tithi can hold at two sunrises in a row and is counted twice (vriddhi). Both follow from the tithi's changing length, not from an error.
Why does the tithi differ between cities?
A tithi ends at the same instant everywhere on Earth, but the clock time of that instant, and the time of sunrise, depend on where you are. So the ending time differs by time zone, and near a boundary the tithi at sunrise can differ between two cities. The times here are for New Delhi; open the home page for your own place.
