Questions people ask
Which month system does the Telugu calendar use?
Amanta: each lunar month ends on the new moon (Amavasya). The Telugu year begins at Ugadi, the first day of Chaitra, and is named from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsarams — this year's name is shown at the top of the page.
How is today's tithi decided?
A tithi is each twelve degrees by which the Moon pulls ahead of the Sun, so thirty make a lunar month. The tithi running at sunrise names the day; the page also gives the exact time it ends, because a tithi rarely lines up with a calendar day.
What are Varjyam and Durmuhurtham?
Durmuhurtham is one or two muhurtas of the day — each a fifteenth of daylight, about 48 minutes — fixed by the weekday and avoided for beginnings. Varjyam is a stretch of about an hour and a half inside each nakshatra, placed by a traditional table and also avoided; Amrita Kalam is its auspicious counterpart.
Why do the times differ between Hyderabad and my city?
Every time on this page is measured from Hyderabad's own sunrise and sunset. A different place has a different sunrise, so its Rahu Kalam, Varjyam and tithi end times differ too. Open the home page to see them for your own place.
