Questions people ask
How does the Kannada calendar reckon the month and year?
Amanta: each maasa ends at the new moon (Amavasye). The year turns at Yugadi, the first day of Chaitra, and takes its name from the sixty-year cycle of samvatsaras, shown at the top of the page.
What are Varjya and Amrita Ghalige?
Each is a stretch fixed within the day's nakshatra — Varjya one to leave alone, Amrita Ghalige a good one — placed by which star it is and scaled to how long that star runs. Both therefore move every day, and on some days one falls twice or not at all.
Why is Rahu Kaala different in Bengaluru and Mangaluru?
Rahu Kaala is one eighth of the daylight counted from the local sunrise, with the weekday choosing the eighth. Mangaluru's sunrise is some minutes later than Bengaluru's, so its Rahu Kaala shifts by the same minutes. These times are for Bengaluru; open the home page for your own place.
Are the festival names the Karnataka ones?
Yes. Yugadi, Nagara Panchami, Gowri Habba, Bali Padyami and Utthana Dwadashi are named as Karnataka names them, while the dates come from the same computation as the rest of the site.
