Questions people ask
Is this Tamil calendar Vakyam or Thirukanitham?
Thirukanitham: the Sun and Moon are computed from a planetary ephemeris. Many printed Tamil calendars follow Vakyam, an older method from verse tables. The two agree at new and full moon, but near the quarter moons Vakyam can run hours apart, so the star or tithi at sunrise differs on roughly one day in ten, and a Tamil month occasionally begins a day later in print.
When does a Tamil month begin?
On the day the Sun enters the next sign of the zodiac, when it enters before sunset; when it enters after sunset, the month begins the next day. That is why the first of a Tamil month moves between the 13th and the 18th of the English month.
What is Nalla Neram, and why is it different on printed sheets?
On a printed daily sheet, Nalla Neram is the publisher's own, nearly fixed table. Here it is the good parts of the Gowri Panchangam — Amirdha, Uthi, Laabam, Sugam and Dhanam — measured from the day's actual sunrise and sunset, so it moves with the season and with the place.
Why does Rahu Kalam change from city to city?
Rahu Kalam is one eighth of the daylight, counted from local sunrise, with the weekday choosing which eighth. Sunrise differs by place, so Chennai's Rahu Kalam differs from Coimbatore's by minutes and from a city abroad by hours. Open the home page to see it for your own place.
