Questions people ask
Is this panchang Purnimanta or Amanta?
Purnimanta, the North Indian reckoning: the lunar month ends at the full moon. So in the dark half the month is named one ahead of the South's — the days the South calls Bhadrapada Krishna are Ashwin Krishna here. The tithi, the nakshatra and every festival date are the same; only the month's name differs.
Which era year is shown?
Vikram Samvat, which turns at Chaitra Shukla 1 — the day kept as Gudi Padwa and Ugadi. The Shaka year is shown beside it, because both appear on printed panchangs.
What is the choghadiya, and when is it used?
Eight parts of the daylight and eight of the night, each named Amrit, Shubh, Labh, Char, Rog, Kaal or Udveg, with the weekday setting the order. It is the quick everyday check in the North and West — good for a short errand, a journey or a purchase — while a wedding or a house-warming is chosen by month, tithi, star and lagna together.
Why is the panchang different from my local one?
Every time here is counted from the sunrise of the place it is computed for, and these are for New Delhi. A panchang printed in Varanasi, Jaipur or Patna uses that city's sunrise, which moves Rahu Kaal and the choghadiya by minutes and can change which tithi holds at sunrise.
