Questions people ask

How is a Hindu festival's date decided?

By a tithi in a lunar month, held at the hour the festival is kept: most at sunrise, some at midday, dusk or midnight. The Gregorian date therefore moves from year to year, and every date here is worked out from the Sun and Moon rather than copied from a list.

Why do calendars sometimes list a festival on different days?

Three usual reasons: the place (a tithi can hold at sunrise in one city and not another), the hour the festival is judged at, and regional practice — Tamil and Malayalam calendars keep some festivals by the solar month, and North and South name the lunar months differently. None of these is an error.

Which day is Ekadashi kept?

This page lists Ekadashi on the day the tithi holds at sunrise. Some Vaishnava communities avoid an Ekadashi touched by Dashami before dawn and fast the next day instead. Follow the rule of your own tradition.

Are regional festivals included?

The general festivals are listed here. Choose your calendar tradition in the app — or open the Tamil or Telugu calendar page — for festivals kept in your region, named the way your calendar names them.
